"Maternity post caesarean"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Maternity Unit, Childbirth & Parenting Education

(as the patient),

Emergency Caesarian in another hospital transferred to Busselton in ambulance not even 12 hours later. I was really happy to go, pain was well managed and felt great, transfer was fine the driver was careful and so the bumps in the road weren’t too bad.

Arrived at Busselton around midday apparently the transfer had been arranged the night before. Greeted by a midwife in the corridor who told us we had to wait in the coffee station nook for our room to be cleaned. Whilst waiting they told us we were in luck as only us and one other patient for two midwife’s - still made us wait nearly an hour in my nighty, bleeding and uncomfortable - got in and our stay was good, like a hotel instead of hospital really, as I had to buzz for any regular pain relief when it failed to arrive over an hour after it was due.

Asked if I could have the same as what I had been having at the initial hospital, as I was really comfortable there, however was told no this is what we offer here, until the night shift midwife arrived on shift -she was great when I was uncomfortable and refused the prn medications they had written up for me - she rang the gp obs and got a phone order for me to match what I had at the other hospital so I finally got some comfort close to midnight. I think her name was Jill- really great midwife was very attentive with lots of heat packs and lovely overnight as I had terrible shoulder pain.

Great that my partner could stay, really I believe every hospital maternity service should support this !

Dear woman123

Thank you for providing feedback to us regarding your experience at Busselton Maternity, especially at this busy time with your new baby.

Firstly, I would like to express my apologies for the reception on arrival to our maternity unit. I would most certainly like to have the opportunity to investigate the reason for the delay on your admission. It would not be our intention to keep you waiting in an uncomfortable environment.

I am also concerned that your pain relief was not effective on admission, but you were listened to by our Night duty Midwife and your pain control was managed.

I am, however, pleased to know that you felt comfortable within the ward setting at Busselton and that your partner could stay with you. We are certainly lucky to be able to provide this for our women.

We do take your feedback seriously and are always looking at how we can improve our service to women and their families. I would appreciate it if you could contact me so that I can discuss your experience with you further to enable us to improve our care.

My name is Karen Swallow, and I am the Clinical Manager of the unit please call 0897536131 or email karen.swallow2@health.wa.gov.au. And I will be happy to speak with you.

With Kind Regards,

Karen Swallow,

Clinical Midwifery Manager

Busselton Health Campus

Dear woman123,

I hope you and your family are well, I would like to provide some feedback from your review posted on care opinion.

I have discussed your experience with my team, and they are disappointed to hear of the reception you received on arrival to the ward, and the delays with your painkiller medication. Your feedback has made us mindful of our communication and the care we provide to our women.

Again, I am pleased you felt comfortable with our facility to support partners staying on site.

Please let me know if I can help any further, you can call me on 089753 6131 or by Email: karen.swallow2@health.wa.gov.au,

Warm regards,

Karen Swallow

Clinical Midwifery Manager.
