"Triage process"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Took my young child in with a broken bone my child was clearly in alot of pain and uncontrollably crying. The 2 staff members we first dealt with were unhelpful and seemed to be laughing at my child in distress.

There were 2 other couples in the waiting area, one lot had been triaged and were waiting for a doctor the other couple hadn’t been triaged yet like us. We waited 20 mins before we were even triaged and when we were triaged I felt the nurse was rude and cold hearted and appeared to not want to be there. My child got weighed and then was sent back out to the waiting area with nurofen where we waited another 1.5hrs to be bought through to see a doctor.

My child was very humiliated in that waiting area with the other paitents starring at them because they were so upset and uncomfortable.

And I believe they were not busy as when we were eventually taken through I recall most of the bays were empty with only 4 occupied and countless staff sitting on the computers and then a group of them laughing and talking about their upcoming plans.

I felt it was really disgusted in the way we were treated by the 3 of them.

However, The Xray staff, the pca, the 2 doctors, the surgeon and the nurse looking after us when we were taken through were very supportive and gave us excellent care cannot fault them.

Dear aquilaxw64

I am sorry to hear your initial experience, when presenting to our Emergency Department, was upsetting and you felt you weren’t treated with the care you should have been.

Your experience has been shared with our Nursing Directors and Business Manager so that we can reinforce the affect our interactions with consumers and visitors can have on their experience of our service. We want our consumers and their families/carers to feel attended to and treated compassionately as we know negative experiences can impact on health outcomes in our community.

Thank you for sharing your story, it is important that we receive feedback to be able to improve our services. If you would like us to review this further please reach out to Laura Dwyer our Acting Operations Manager of the Kalgoorlie Health Campus by calling 9080 5817 or emailing Laura.Dwyer@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
