"Overbooking"

About: Albany Health Campus / Day Procedure Unit

(as the patient),

Been on the waitlist for 10 months as well as several ER visits due to excruciating pain (which they told me to take Panadol for and sent me home).

Was told to be at the hospital before a certain time, sat in the waiting room for an hour with 3 other patients who I believe had been waiting over 2 hours. Then once taken through to admissions, sat in the cold waiting room for 2 hours and told that there is 6 people ahead of me to see the same doctor and that I’ll be waiting at least another 3 hours. Why were so many patients booked in when it seems to me they cant manage them properly?

After fasting and waiting 5 hours, I was told that patients that haven’t been through by a certain time will be sent home and that there’s a 2 hour wait so I would’ve been sent home anyway after waiting all day. I decided to leave after waiting so long and the staff blamed it on me having anxiety and being nervous (which I wasn’t as I had waited almost a year to finally not be in pain) and said next time I’ll know what to expect. After telling the coordinator that I wanted to go as I was feeling sick, weak and nauseous, I felt they were sarcastic and made smart-a** comments repeatedly.

I feel I'll be waiting months to get another appointment so more unpaid days off of work in pain. 10 months on the waiting list and 5 hours wait for a  15 minute procedure. I believe this hospital overbooks patients and, in my opinion, is an absolute joke.

Dear tangofd96

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. It sounds like we did not prepare you very well for what to expect when attending the hospital for a day procedure. Our usual advice to patients having surgery is to not have solid food after 0600 on the morning of surgery and to not have clear fluids after leaving home.

I am very sorry that you were unable to wait for your operation. Unfortunately, there are often last minute changes to our operating schedules due to circumstances that we cannot control. We do our very best to stick to the schedule but sometimes that is just not possible. In addition you mention that you felt that the coordinator was sarcastic and made inappropriate comments. This will also be discussed with the team.

Our registrar will contact you in the near future to reschedule your operation and you should receive a letter in the next few weeks confirming the date. Please do not hesitate to contact me on ahc.feedback@health.wa.gov.au if you do require further information.

Your sincerely

Dr Paul Mark | Director Medical Services

WA Country Health Service – Albany Health Campus
