"Four different lack of treatments I have experienced"

About: South Metropolitan Health Service

(as the patient),

Firstly, despite contacting state health departments and ministerial offices, the department for mental health, the Rockingham mental health assistance body. I have been informed by three separate GP Practices and Rockingham mental health assistance that there is no access to specialist Referral under public health bulk billing for a head injury/ mental, psychiatrist, psychologist appointment. Despite Centrelink instructions to request from my GP. The GP’s also refused to sign a standard Centrelink assessment form stating they are not qualified. This has left me with no follow up treatment or continuation assistance for my condition under the public health system.

Secondly, gradually going deaf. Still waiting on treatment from Fiona Stanley hospital, regarding Operation to right ear. Despite excess of what I believe is the 365 day waiting rules for public patients.

Thirdly, I have a lump under left arm. Apparently, no MRI, available under WA public health. No bulk bill or public treatment. Have been given a Cat 2, but no Hospital referral available to see specialist for at least eighteen months, informed by Rockingham Hospital.

Fourth, I have a back injury. Over four months of no specialist appointment/ referral, have attended four ED’s, had one written emergency referral to Fiona Stanley Hospital ED, by my GP, requesting for me to see spine specialist and an MRI. Sent back to GP with instructions to request a referral and an MRI. When asking the ED Consultant why I wasn’t having an MRI, I recall they replied that they’re expensive!

I then attended another hospital’s ED on advice of a spine surgeon to ask to see a spine registrar. The ED doctor refused to allow. Throughout this period of time my condition worsening by the day, unable to stand, pain a 10 constant, no employment or income for the four months, mental distress increasing, no working pain relief.

Then ambulance admittance to Rockingham Hospital, due to collapse at home. Vomiting due to pain, unable to stand or self support. 13 days at hospital no improvement in pain, no improvement in ability to walk. Doctors response from Rockingham Hospital they were happy with my condition! Doctors tell me to learn to live with it! Doctor administering Spine injection treatment explains, I have a large protrusion on my spine. I recall they then stated that from what they can see I must be in a massive amount of pain. The procedure didn’t work, no improvement.

I was then sent home to wait for a referral to Fiona Stanley Hospital in eighteen months to two years time?!

At the time of writing this, now at home, hospital instructing me to see GP who is now responsible for me. Can’t get appointment with GP as my concession card has been discontinued. So just waiting till my medication runs out and, I believe, I lose my home.

All this and a doctor telling me the Australian medical system is one the best in the world. I am afraid for my future housing, health and mental health

Dear Ant ant,

I am very sorry to hear of the difficulties you have experienced across multiple sites and recognise the impact this is having on your wellbeing.

Regarding your admission to Rockingham General Hospital (RGH), without knowing the specifics of your case, it is difficult to comment. I am sorry to hear that the spinal injection was not effective and urge you to revisit your GP so they can liaise with the health service regarding your ongoing management.

Rockingham Peel Group does not have one person or service who would provide head injury/mental, psychiatrist, psychologist appointments. However, a referral to a psychiatrist can be requested by your GP to the Rockingham Kwinana Mental Health Service, if you live in Rockingham, or to Peel Community Mental Health, if you live in the Mandurah area.

Alternately you could contact a community mental health team yourself, the information is available via Rockingham Peel Group - Mental health.

Your GP can also refer you to a psychologist through a mental health care plan.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.

Best wishes

Clive Mulroy.

Update posted by Ant ant (the patient)

Thank you kindly for reaching out. I would kindly ask if I may contact you directly please? I have dealt with this department in the past, with very obstructive difficulties. To put it politely I feel they don’t liaise or serve.

Kind Regards

Ant ant
