"Security"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Whilst visiting a mh inpatient relative in Kalgoorlie recently I was repeatedly shocked by what I believe was the lack of professionalism and their stated disregard for others safety including the Drs and Nurses.

I've seen one security officer repeatedly sitting in hospital grounds with their shoes off, listening to their headphones. A code black was called and it seemed the security guard didn't react, I was just about to ask them if they heard it when I overheard another person mention it to them. I recall the security guard then put their shoes on and slowly trudged to the code black whilst looking seemingly annoyed. Later on I had small chat with them and the other guard and I recall they both kept complaining about disliking the Drs, Nurses and patients, I believe using derogatory terms.

I changed the subject as I felt they were aggressive and asked for their supervisors name to which I recall they laughed they’re in Perth and doesn't care what happens to Kalgoorlie.

I was taken aback, asked again the supervisor's name and their names, I felt the security guard then became aggressive and threatened a violent accident to my loved ones and myself if I'm asking for names to make a complaint.

I stood my ground and I believe when they realised I wouldn't be apparently bullied, the security attempted to pass it off as they were only joking, which I believe it wasn't.

My relative told me later that recently they believe security has been heavy handed with mh patients and lying for each other. My relative said the Drs, Nurses, PCAs are all great but security seem to be abusive. My relative is petrified of the security officer and begged me to keep things anonymous much to my chagrin.

Based on my experience, I would ask the hospital to closer monitor the seemingly thuggish behaviour of security. I believe your hardworking Drs and Nurses deserve alot better than to be apparently vilified and complained about by the persons who are meant to help protect them.

I don't know if the security officer involved will even step in when necessary as I recall they stated they don't get paid enough.

Dear courageyw77,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns, feedback from all of our visitors and clients is very important to us and allows us to review and improve all areas of our services. I am sorry to hear about the experiences you and your family members had with our security officers.

Since you provided your feedback we have regularly met with our security team and as a result are reviewing the processes for their orientation and onboarding, so again I thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

I hope your family member is now recovering well. If you have any further concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to Alicia Michalanney, Director Kalgoorlie Health Campus on either (08) 9080 5817 or via email Alicia.Michalanney@health.wa.gov.au.
