"ED waiting area"

About: Margaret River Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I went to the hospital after I couldn’t get a gp appointment for a cough I have had for 3 weeks. I spoke to health direct who suggested I go to hospital. I was triaged in the pergola outside the entrance to the hospital. The space I was sitting in was cold, damp and windy. I could be viewed by everyone walking past, into the hospital or even walking their dog through the car park.

I had to have an x ray and was expected to get dressed in the area. I was also told I could leave my stuff in the outdoor setting and that it would be safe there- I don’t think so!

I was diagnosed with pneumonia. I had a covid test while I was waiting and it was negative. Isn’t it time we build a purpose built, warm isolation unit at the hospital? The staff were lovely they said I’m sorry this is how it is.

I was sitting out in the cold, and I am coughing and coughing. Somebody brought out a disposable blanket that so that I could wrap it around myself because the gown had a gap in the back. I felt very undignified walking through the car park with my clothes in my hand.

The staff were lovely but I feel it was not ideal for anyone to be treated outside

Dear echogf45,

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion

I am sorry that you were left out in the cold wearing only a gown and sent to X-Ray through the external door.

We have changed our processes so that once you have been cleared from respiratory illnesses, you will be brought into the department and changed into a gown within the hospital and not in the ambulance bay.

Thank you for highlighting this issue and allowing us to make changes that are patient focused.

I hope you are recovering well

Kind regards

Marie Tweedie
