I was transferred to King Edward Memorial Hospital and referred to Oncology from a different hospital after a complete molar pregnancy a few months prior. I was terrified but after my first appointment with Marion and Emma, I wish I had gone to KEMH from the start.
They made me feel so at ease and knowing that I was the first patient in the GTD centre I felt very taken care of. My following tests results over the next few weeks showed that even though my HCG levels resembled a rollercoaster yet on a downward trajectory, it was slower than what my team would’ve liked so I was given one more week to see if my levels reached <5 but if not, I was going to be booked in to receive methotrexate injections. I was gutted. This is the last thing I wanted and I just felt like this journey would never end. I explained my hesitation especially because I was so close to being within normal range and my team came up with additional tests to try before administering the injections which I was so grateful for.
As it turned out, these tests were not needed because miraculously the following week my HCG levels were in normal range for the first time. I finally felt like there might be an end to all this. Over the next couple weeks, my levels remained normal and I was able to graduate to 6 months of monthly blood tests which have all come back as normal too. Throughout this experience, I have been scared, overwhelmed and extremely anxious to say the least but I’m so thankful for my team at KEMH for their patience and for always being there to answer any and all of my questions. I believe if I had gone to them to begin with, with their specialised knowledge on GTD, then my whole traumatic experience could have been averted. I am forever in their debt.
