"Birth experience across two hospitals"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my son at BRH recently.

Due to birth complications we were transferred to Bunbury from Margaret River Hospital. My obstetrician Dr Liam & MGP midwife Melony coordinated a safe transfer to expert care in Bunbury Regional. From what started as a bit of a traumatic experience for my partner and I ended in such a positive outcome and memory we will treasure forever.

We were greeted by midwife Melissa on arrival and were transferred to birth suite for delivery with kiellands forceps by the incredible Dr Andrea. A specialised procedure we are so grateful for as we were able to safely deliver our boy and avoid an emergency caesarean. Melissa coordinated staff and procedures while keeping myself and partner informed throughout. Thanks to her I went from feeling out of control and terrified to feeling reassured and safe and informed. Once baby was born paediatricians Lila and Carsten assessed and resuscitated baby while keeping my partner and I reassured and informed.

Baby was transferred to the special care nursery for treatment and support, the team were so caring and thoughtful throughout while keeping our son safe. We are so so so grateful for the care we recieved while at BRH. How lucky we are to have access to expert medical care. Post birth Melissa debriefed my partner and I on our birth and procedures completed. We are so thankful for her, we ended up with a positive birth experience thanks to her. We are in awe of her and keep saying to each other how fun she would be to work with. She entered our room each time with an infectious energy and smile on her face, her positivity was transferable. Melissa even stayed back an hour after her shift had finished to chat with us the first night we stayed.

Special thanks to Dr Andrea you are incredible! You had such confidence and we’re so kind to us, thank you so much. To the paediatric team, for keeping our son safe. Harriet thank you so much for your guidance and breastfeeding expertise. Thank you for checking in on me. To the beautiful nursery team, Annette, Abbey, Narelle

I am missing some names here (baby brain)

I would recommend BRH maternity and hope I am lucky enough to birth here again

Dear Gratefulpatient123,

Thank you for taking the time to share your birth journey with us on Care Opinion. And what a journey it was. I can only imagine the anxiety you experienced when advised that you required transferal to Bunbury Hospital, and I suspect your birth plans turned upside down.

To read of the collaboration across the health care teams of Margaret River and Bunbury Hospital, and of the exceptional care and compassion provided by the Medical, Midwifery and paediatric team throughout your experience was wonderful. Your story demonstrates the positive impact teamwork and communication, with both colleagues and patients has, even in the difficult circumstances of birth complications.

I have forwarded you kind words to all members of the Bunbury and Margaret River teams, and they are all very grateful for your recognition. Melissa and Dr Andrea are particularly pleased that they were able to assist and support you to have a positive experience.

On behalf of the teams at Bunbury and Margaret River hospital, we hope you and your family are settling in at home, and wish you well with your parenting journey.

Kind regards,

Katrina
