"Missed fractured collar bone in young child"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My child took our young grandchild to Rockingham emergency after they had an accident and were complaining about their arm.  The nurse on duty said my grandchild was moving it and doing things although still was showing signs of pain. Administered some pain killer And sent them away no scan x ray or even seeing a doctor as too busy.

Our child returned home and called a locum doctor however could not assess for a referral as my grandchild was too groggy sleeping.  They rang their own doctor and was told no appointment for 2 weeks.  Recently, our child rang and demanded appointment with doctor as the school rang and it was affecting their movement in some activities   Finally got in on the next morning got the scan referral. But no where open for scan as it was a weekend.

On the Monday went for scan. Report sent to doctor and scan place said to see the doctor urgently. Upon calling doctors receptionist said no appointments for a week however our child's spouse insisted the doctor call them and look at scans. Told my grandchild's collar bone fractured. 1 week of putting up with pain I believe a young child should not have to go through if Rockingham nurses assessed correctly and at least scanned them. No matter how busy. We are talking about a very young child! They would not have to have suffered.  Terrible treatment in my opinion.

I feel nurses need to show their skills in organising caring assessments and actually doing the correct thing never mind how busy they are. I believe it should have been dealt with and in my opinion, it was negligence big time!

Dear cetushk66,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your grandchild’s recent experience in the Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) Emergency Department (ED). I am sorry to read about the level of care you felt that they received, I appreciate that this would have been a distressing time for your family.

It is usual for patients presenting with this type of injury to be assessed by a nurse practitioner who provides treatment and advice. Without knowing the particulars regarding your grandchild’s presentation, it is difficult to investigate further. Therefore, I would urge you to contact our Consumer Liaison officers on 9599 4323 to provide your grandchild’s name and details so that we can review the incident.

Thank you for sharing your story, your feedback is important to us, and I hope your grandchild is recovering well.

Kind Regards

Kath Smith
