"My four observations"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

First of all the medical care is excellent and so is the follow up at home. Simply wonderful.

But number one, I feel the emergency staff look like rabbits caught in a headlight, seem to me to be completely overwhelmed and stressed.

Number two, I recall the wards look dirty and floors have rubbish on them. I question who cleans these places.

Number three, the ward management is a nightmare in my opinion...shifting patients around the place, I felt like I was on a day tour and believe it was not helpful to anyone.

But number four...oh my, oh my. Queuing up for an hour to get into a car park where you cant use cash, driving around endlessly looking for somewhere else to park, all for the privilege of being seemingly gouged over $3 an hour to see a loved one? Really? In my opinion, parking is a major fiasco here and totally and utterly inadequate.

Dear falcongx77,

Thank you for your kind words regarding the treatment and care provided by our staff at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH). I am immensely proud of all the staff who work tirelessly here, from medical and nursing to our ancillary support staff.

I will try to answer your observations in the order you have listed them:

1) The FSH ED sees over 300 patients per day and at times could appear busy and stressed dependant on what is going on. I apologise that you felt they were overwhelmed. I am extremely proud of the care and treatment the staff in ED provide to the 300+ patients they see per day. They cope with immense pressure, focussing on providing excellent patient care.

2) Thank you for sharing your observation about the area that you observed to be dirty. We have a dedicated team who we expect to deliver a high standard of cleaning. We will share your observations with supervisors and ask that they are more vigilant and conduct spot checks during their shifts. If you wouldn’t mind, please contact Shivani Sharma (6152 2222) who is the Acting Manager, Operations to advise the specific areas you observed to be dirty – that would be very helpful.

3) We strive to place all patients in the right bed with minimal bed moves. Patients may need to be moved for several reasons. For example, where one issue is resolved and they need a different specialty; or at times due to demand, it may mean that some patients are placed on other wards for a short time until their specialty bed becomes available. Any such moves are made considering a lot of factors. However, it is never ideal. I am sorry that the bed moves made yours and your loved one's experience more challenging.

4) I acknowledge the difficulty in accessing parking at FSH. The parking is an ongoing issue for staff, patients and visitors such as yourself. There are strategies in place currently to help ease the situation. If you would like specific detail regarding the strategies we are looking in to, please contact my team for details via FSH.ExecutiveDirectorCorrespondence@health.wa.gov.au.

I hope that you loved one is recovering well, and I thank you for your feedback.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty.
