"My child and the lack of care by staff"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child has very severe eczema and has done since infancy and as a clinician myself i know what it looks like and how it behaves.

Recently my child suddenly developed a pinprick rash that doesn't blanch, a sore throat and slight headache and the rash looks nothing like their eczema and covers their entire body. The rash isn't itcy and for the first time in years their eczema doesn't bother them either.

When we presented to the ED the triage nurse and paediatric nurse didn't look past the eczema, the interrupted halfway through us explaining why we were there and seemingly labelled my child a non priority and, I felt, didn't listen to anything we said. Absolute negligence in my opinion.

Dear leatheryt85,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent experience in the Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) Emergency Department (ED) with your sick child. I was very sorry to read that staff didn't listen to your concerns and that you were interrupted when explaining why you presented to the ED. The RGH ED follows the Australian Government Triage Scale where a senior nurse assesses patients on arrival to determine how urgently they need to be seen by a doctor, that said I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t feel your concerns were received as a priority.

The ED is committed to providing compassionate quality care and your feedback is important as it assists us to identify areas we can improve. I encourage you to contact our Consumer Liaison officers on 9599 4323 to provide your name and details of your presentation so that we can fully investigate the issues you have raised during your visit.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Kath Smith
