"Mental health admission"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital

(as a relative),

My sibling was transferred from another public hospital psychiatric unit so they could be managed in their local area. As I understand it, the expectation of the referring team was that they would be referred to the aged care mental health team for long term management in the community with a caseworker and follow up. At this point my sibling had been in hospital for 9 weeks in both the private and public system, as 3 different psychiatric teams felt they were suffering severe anxiety and depression, and unable to cope at home without support.

After a single assessment by the consultant at POW my sibling was informed they were to be immediately discharged, without any consultation with family, who all live distant to Sydney. This discharge was despite my sibling being suicidal and too anxious to leave inside without a companion. It was suggested they get a taxi or bus home. I recall they were told (in front of me as I insisted on a consultation with the doctor before leaving the hospital) that they probably didn’t even need the medication they had been on for psychotic illness for the last 40 years, and that many people have thoughts of suicide. We were then shown the door and told to leave. My sibling feels their life is now even more useless as the doctor apparently feels my sibling has no illness.

They are now too scared to return to their local hospital as they ‘don’t believe’ they are unwell or need help.

I feel this has been an extremely upsetting, cruel and stressful way of treating a vulnerable person, with an apparent total disregard and disrespect for the opinions of medical, ancillary and family knowledge and opinions.

Even though I understand care in the community is the goal, I believe this could have been felt with in a more respectful and helpful way.

As a medical professional myself I feel total despair and disgust at the treatment my sibling received.
