"Emergency department care"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I arrived at the ED very late at night, and was finally seen by a doctor at about 7 hours later. Check up lasted about 15mins to know if I had broken my hand, during this time I saw about 3-5 other patients absolutely, in my opinion, lose their minds and I honestly don’t blame them. I saw a patient sleep on the floor because there were not enough beds and I  honestly felt so sorry for them once they seemed to get very distressed as I recall they said the only way to get help was if they were to harm themselves.

Saw another patient sleep on the floor for an hour. In my opinion, during this time they were sleeping on the floor it seemed as they were dead. I mean if they died on the floor, I believe no one would even know because no one even checked up on them during this time. Which was so concerning for me.

I believe the nurses were doing their best at the front to manage patients and provide care but once I had gotten called in to do my X-ray I saw some staff just sitting around giggling amongst themselves. Which honestly, I felt was disturbing after what I had seen in the wait room. It seems the nurses at the front are not given support and if there aren’t enough beds in the ED would it not make sense to at the least have the chairs in the ED without the arm rest so that people could at least have somewhere to lie down on instead of having to sleep on the floor?

Dear correspondenceyz89,

Thank you for letting us know about your recent trip to the Emergency Department (ED) at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I would like to extend my sincere apologies for the unacceptable wait time you experienced.

I acknowledge that it is not an ideal environment, particularly late at night or in the early hours, for patients who are feeling unwell and exhausted and there is limited space to sit or lie down.

SCGH is committed to improving the services provided to our patients. We acknowledge that by optimising access and patient flow across the service this will help to improve the patient experience. We are in the process of planning an upgrade to the ED and this will include an increase in its capacity and a subsequent reduction of wait times for our patients.

It is our hope that we provide a far more positive experience for you should you need to attend the Emergency Department again in the future.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

Warm regards

Jodi Graham

Executive Director, SCGOPHCG
