"My husband's surfing accident."

Recently, around midday my hubbie had a surfing accident in Esperance. I received a call from his surfing friend who drove him to the Esperance hospital, telling me my hubbie had been hit by his surfboard to the mouth. 

The sight of him was pretty horrific and confronting. His jaw was broken, his bottom right jaw was now pushed in and back onto his tongue teeth are all over the place and he had a good gash on that side of his mouth. 

The lovely orderly on roster Teal was lovely straight away comforting me, I felt the whole team actually was great! He was in so much pain after the adrenalin wore off but they were so fast and caring sorting him out and tending to him. 

If he felt nauseous they were fast on changing his pain relief, everything! 

The gratitude to all the staff who supported me and him thru this terrible time was beyond words so very much appreciated! 

I wish I could remember the whole teams names but I was in so much shock at the time unfortunately I can't remember everyone. But the morning orderly Teal, the afternoon/ night orderly David and one nurse in particular named Bethany stood out to us! The were so compassionate, caring and nice to us both. Also the tall male Dr who was there I'm sorry I forgot your name but you were also fabulous! They nicknamed my hubbie 'Mr Jaw!' which we thought was funny and great! The little things to put a smile on our faces during the experience 😊

My apologies for the delay in responding to your story, we have been very busy over the last couple of weeks at the hospital and I am playing catch up. What an ordeal this must have been and I can only imagine the ongoing medical and dental care now required, I do hope that your husband is on the road to recovery and will be back surfing our beautiful beaches soon.

We have such a great team in the ED, the clinical staff whom are so experienced in what they do as well as our support staff who ensure everything runs smoothly in the background. We also have great support from the emergency telehealth services (ETS) if specialist advice is required and our Acute Patient Transfer Coordination (APTC) Team that assist in timely and efficient patient transfer either via Royal Flying Doctors or St Johns Ambulance.

We have shared your thanks and appreciation with the teams and have also provided our thanks to Teal, David, Bethany and our Doctor. It is so nice, when something so bad has happened, that the actions of others makes such a difference to the patient journey in a time that can be extremely destressing and frightening for the patient and their family. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story.
