"Access to medication from pharmacy after surgery"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Pharmacy

(as the patient),

I had an operation to restore my tear duct, after it was blocked by a punctal plug. I had waited 18 months. I felt the surgery and after care was faultless.

At the 2 week post op checkup, the surgeon explained it was about trying to keep the little tube in as long as possible. He could see my eye was getting inflamed/irritated so he prescribed a steroid and an antibiotic eye ointment. I managed to get to the SEH pharmacy 15 mins before closing, but they wouldn’t serve me. Told me in, I felt, an offhand way to go to my local chemist as it was cheaper.

I don’t have a local chemist, and didn’t manage to get to one. 2 days later, my eye gets really irritated, I rub it carefully I think, but next thing I’m holding the tiny tube that needed to stay in. = operation fail.

Seriously! Operation fail seemingly because they couldn’t extend themselves to serve me. What a waste of everyone’s time and resources I feel this is, and now I have to do it all again. And as a sole trader, the cost of days off vs paying the extra for the slightly increased cost of medication.

I’m utterly frustrated at their apparent attitude.

Dear vegahw54,

Thank you for providing this feedback. I apologise for the inconvenience it caused you of not being served with the appropriate medication by our Pharmacy unit.

We value your feedback, could you please get in touch with us through SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au so I can investigate further and address this concern.
