"My visit to the Clinic"

About: Derby Hospital / Visiting Specialist Services

(as the patient),

I attended the Clinic as I have had several BCC excised and also several SCC burnt off with moderate success.

I was seen by 3 practitioners . Neither of them introduced themselves. They identified several “Spots” that needed to be burnt off. I then identified one “spot that was on my ring finger that had been burnt on my last visit about 12 months ago.

So while I was talking to one of the Doctors, another I think Medical Student, used the liquid nitrogen without me knowing . They gave the area three long blasts and when I complained that they had done it while I was unaware they said that is the best way! I told them it really hurt and it was still burning for 10 minutes.

Within 4 hours a large blister had appeared. The visiting skin specialist was in the next room and they were called to look at 2 other “spots” on my leg. When they came in I was saying to the person who had just used the Liquid Nitrogen about how much it hurt and how painful it was compared to other times . The Specialist then took the opportunity to show those present how to use the Liquid Nitrogen.

Surely this training should have been done before these seemingly inexperienced practitioners were put in charge of that apparatus. I am now nursing a large blister the size of a 5 cent piece on my ring finger.

Dear delphinusph98,

Thank you for bringing this important matter to my attention. It is disappointing for me to hear that your visit to the Dermatology Clinic was not a reassuring experience for you.

I have shared your story with our Senior Medical Officer (SMO), Chris, who is happy to approach the doctors involved and get an understanding of why they approached your review in the manner you describe. Please be assured that safe and professional conduct is considered a minimum requirement for any doctor working at Derby District Hospital and anything that falls short of this standard will receive the attention it deserves.

In order for Chris to get a complete understanding of the day’s events, I would be grateful if you could please contact the medical secretary on 9193 3343 and provide your preferred contact phone number, so Chris can discuss this further with you.

Regards

Dan
