"Recent admission of our teen"

About: Epworth Richmond Monash Children's Hospital / Emergency Care

(as a parent/guardian),

We were asked to present to ED by our GP as our (then not yet adult) teen was not medically stable due to their eating disorder. They were admitted recently. We spent the night in ED as there were no beds. We were taken up to Aviary 4B the next day and put on meal plan 3. Our teen was stressed and self-harmed on the following day. The lacerations were so bad, they need the plastics team to perform surgery, which was done a couple of day later. Meanwhile our teen had their birthday the day before their surgery.

We received a call the day after surgery and told that our teen was medically stable and will be discharged. So we went in to pick them up.

1) Our teen was told by a doctor as they were medically stable, they will be discharged.

2) Apparently, they told our teen they fear for their well being and asked if our teen would like to be referred to youth care in Dandenong. Our teen said no. So the doctor is asking this, in my eyes young teen, who has self harmed badly just a couple of days before if they need to be referred. They are obviously still in distress! How are they supposed to make a decision about their mental health?

3) They have not progressed beyond meal plan 3. Extremely low weight and still too mentally unwell to feed themselves or be fed outside a medical facility. And yet, the doctor discharged them without a referral, a plan or any information about after surgery care. In my opinion, I feel this is negligent care.

4) We left with no further info or paperwork of any kind or any referral to move forward.

In less than 1 hour of being home, my teen severely self-harmed again and had to be taken to ED. We went to Epworth ED in Richmond as we wanted to get attended to quickly as they were losing blood.

We had a referral letter to a doctor at Epworth Camberwell for ED inpatient care. But we were told to that our teen was too acute for private care.

So now we have a teen who is too acute for private care and apparently not 'sick' enough for public care.

Where do we go from here?

1) admitted and put on meal plan 3, no progression in feeding but discharged because the doctors deemed them medically stable. (Though they are still not eating without help)

2) Epworth would not admit them because deemed too acute.

3) We called mental health triage and were told we should be been referred to help/care by both Monash and Epworth.

4) We were not given any referrals just denied care.

We really are in limbo and just trying to keep our teen alive. Based on our experience, that is how low our expectations are. Just keeping them alive as I feel no health care provider seems to care.
