"Anaesthetic consult"

About: Albany Health Campus / Maternity Ward

(as the patient),

I was reviewed by 2 consultant anaesthetists for high BMI prior to confirming a caesar here in Albany.

First time I saw them, my BMI was over, and was told unless I could lose the weight I would have to go to Perth for my caesar, however told in person if I lost the weight I could have it here. My specialist told me that written in the letter back from the Anesthetist, that it was highly unlikely I would lose the weight and just refer to me Perth.

I lost the weight by 32 weeks, and the Obstetrician saw me and cleared me for a Caesar here.

I was then called by waitlisting asking for another consult by another anaesthetist to confirm the weight loss. As the weight is very close to cut off, I informed them I would weigh myself prior to the appointment on the scales I have been managing my weight on throughout my pregnancy. At 34 weeks my BMI was 44.9, below 45. That anaesthetist told me in person that they were not going to stop me having my baby here in Albany.

My specialist informed me recently that they are not going to let me have my baby here, and I feel is insinuating that I am lying about my weight.

That is two appointments with two different anaesthetists, saying one thing to me, the patient, and saying a completely different and contradictory thing to my specialist.

Based on my experience, I wonder how am I supposed to trust my doctor if I feel they are lying to my face?

Dear outflowbp84

Thank you for your post regarding your experience here at Albany Health Campus.

I am very sorry that you feel that the Anaesthetists have been lying to you. I understand that our team here strive to be careful, considered and honest in their communications and I wonder if something has changed between when you spoke to the Anaesthetist and when you spoke to your specialist, or if there has simply been some miscommunication.

We would love to be able to look into your case and ensure your care is being managed appropriately and see if there is anything we can do to enable you to birth at Albany Health Campus. In order to do that, we would appreciate it if you would contact us and I would encourage you to reach out to Dr Paul Mark, Director Medical Services, on paul.mark@health.wa.gov.au. Our Anaesthetic Lead is also keen to meet you if you need further information or explanation.

Yours sincerely

Wendy McKinley
