"Nurse leaving room and inconsistent information"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / ICU Intensive Care Unit

(as a relative),

My relative was in ICU. During their stay they had some lovely nurses care for them, and a few nice doctors.

There were also a couple of nurses that were extremely rude to both my relative and their family that were visiting (not sure if I’m allowed to name them). One nurse that looked after my relative was constantly leaving the room. This ICU nurse asked me (as a visitor) if I was planning on staying for awhile, and if so they would leave for awhile and come back. They left the room multiple times, which was scary since I am not trained medically. My relative died a few days later in ICU.

Although I appreciate the time and work the nurses and doctors put into caring for my relative, I found that the information that was given to me throughout my relative's treatment was inconsistent.

Hi moonqx85,

Firstly, let me begin by expressing my sincere condolences on the recent passing of your family member.

I truly appreciate that during what I can only imagine to be a difficult time for you all you have taken a moment to complement our nursing and medical staff who cared for your family member during their admission to ICU at Fiona Stanley Hospital.

It was, however, incredibly disappointing to read that not all the staff you encountered during your visits extended the same amount of kindness and compassion which we strive for as core values of our Health Service, and I sincerely apologise for this.

In relation to information shared with family and visitors, I am sure you can appreciate that we have strict guidelines around what information can be communicated and with whom. This is usually the patient's Next of Kin. This may or may not be relevant in your case, however I can only reiterate my apologies for your experience in finding information about your loved one to be inconsistent. As Health Care Professionals we are all acutely aware how vital to the patient care and journey it is to keep family members up to date and informed as much as possible.

I would like to look into the issues you raised more thoroughly and have shared your story with our Patient and Family Liaison Service. I encourage you to contact them on from 6152 4013 (Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 4.30 pm) or via email anytime: FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au to ensure a comprehensive investigation is undertaken.

Once again thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion so that we can learn and improve the care we deliver to our patients and the community.

Kind Regards,

Neil Doverty
