About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I'm a transman who recently gave birth at KEMH. I went through the MGP and had the most supportive team of midwives you could imagine. My main midwife Maddi exceeded my expectations in everyway and made every effort to ensure I was comfortable while in her care. The staff I saw across KEMH were all incredibly supportive and open minded. I was made feel supported, heard, and I can not fault my care at all.

I would say that I believe the hospital itself could make some changes to be more inclusive. Specifically, in many areas there are only female patient bathrooms and most information/pamphlets etc refer only to women/mothers/females. Minor changes to make the language more inclusive could be made, for example patient bathrooms vs visitors bathrooms rather than women vs mens. Information booklets could say birth parent, patient, parent etc.

I would highly recommend using the MGP model of care and although there are still ways in which I believe KEMH could be more inclusive, the midwives and doctors I saw do an outstanding job.

Dear Unicorn56

Congratulations on the new addition to your family and thank you for taking a moment to share your wonderful experience during what must be a very busy time.

It is very gratifying to hear how supportive and inclusive you found all of the staff who cared for you during your pregnancy and birth. The behaviour you have described aligns well with the values of care, respect, integrity and teamwork we expect from our staff and it is very pleasing to note how supported you felt whilst being cared for. Maddi clearly made a great impression on you by making sure you felt comfortable and safe at all times. I know that Maddi will appreciate your positive comments and I look forward to passing them onto her.

As we continue to mature as an organisation, we appreciate feedback from all of our patients on how we might better meet their needs, and I would like to thank you for your sincere comments on where our journey needs to be taking us into the future. Your suggestions on how we might be more inclusive will be given full consideration as we continue to review and revise our facilities and the information we provide to patients.

Thank you once again for your positive and encouraging feedback. I wish you and your family all the very best.

Kind regards

Safiyah
