"Poorly help supplied at the Hospital ER"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a friend),

Have admitted a friend with severe abdominal pain to the ER at Geraldton regional hospital 4 times in under a week, once even arriving by ambulance, only to be left seemingly untreated, given panadol and sent home .

After presenting my friend to another hospital one day later, my friend was diagnosed with pancreaitis and at the time of writing this was still awaiting treatment 24hrs after being admitted.

I believe this health system really is not working for those in need of help.

Dear monoceroswn99

Thank you for reaching out on Care Opinion and advocating for your friend.

Our aim at Geraldton Regional Hospital is always to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to anyone who presents to the Emergency Department and I regret that on these occasions you felt we did not meet those standards.

I would appreciate if your friend would consider speaking with me so I can fully understand their circumstances. They can consent to us continuing our discussions with yourself if they prefer. After I’ve spoken with them the medical team can investigate the events in conjunction with our Safety and Quality team, to identify any shortcomings in assessment or treatment and make recommendations of any improvements required. My name is Dr Ranjit Paul, I am the Director Medical Services at Geraldton Hospital. I can be contacted on (08) 9956 8125 or you can email me at WACHS-MidwestMD@health.wa.gov.au

If at any time either yourself or your friend feel they are not receiving the care or treatment they need, we have a service at the hospital called Aishwarya’s CARE Call. You may notice posters about Aishwarya’s CARE Call in our Emergency Department – this is a 3-step process for patients, carers and family members to use if they are worried, or they, or a person they care for, are getting sicker in hospital. In the Midwest, no matter what hospital you go to this number is 1800 316 729 or you can find out more here at: WA Country Health Service - Aishwarya’s CARE Call

I look forward to hearing from your friend or yourself to further discuss your concerns.

Regards,

Dr Ranjit Paul
