"ED Doctor"

About: Narrogin Health Service / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My partner attended the Narrogin ED last month after being unwell for 72 hours. We live 1 hour from Narrogin however we made the trip as we knew my partner would require a medical review. On arrival they were cared for by a lovely nurse and student doctor.

Unfortunately the doctor's bedside manner was for lack of a better word, disgusting in my opinion. They seemingly refused to investigate my partner's illness and instead told them to go home and made my partner feel pressured to leave the facility despite them feeling too unwell to go home.

Prior the doctor’s review my partner and the nurse/student doctor were discussing a blood test. 48 hours earlier a GP had started antibiotics and told my partner to present to ED if they were not better in 48 hours. The doctor offhandedly said my partner didn’t need antibiotics and that they (the doctor) wouldn’t have done that without doing any investigation or explaining their decision.

We are completely disgusted with the doctor and the manner in which they conducted themselves and tarnished our experience at Narrogin hospital. As a result of the doctor refusing to investigate we had to drive >200km to a private facility in Perth to access care that we believe should have been provided to us much closer to home.

Dear aracr46

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience at the Emergency Department at the Narrogin Health Service.

I am very sorry that you had this experience and did not receive adequate medical assistance, advice or support closer to home as well as for any behaviour and/or unprofessionalism that has caused such distress to you and your partner.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could reach out to me directly to discuss this matter, if you or your partner feel comfortable. I genuinely want to understand the situation better, so we can take the necessary steps to ensure such incidents do not recur by providing feedback to the staff involved in your care. I can be contacted directly on 08 9881 0413 or if you prefer via email kristie.nottle@health.wa.gov.au.

Warm regards,

Kristie Nottle

A/Operations Manager Southern
