I recently sustained an injury to my leg and presented to Geraldton Hospital Emergency Department on a very busy afternoon. The care I received from Nursing and Medical was exceptional and I was seen and discharged within 2 hours of presenting.
I was discharged from ED with instructions to see my GP in 3 days for wound review. Anyone who lives in Geraldton knows that it is almost impossible to get a GP appointment in under 3 weeks.
A week or so after, I was able to see the amazing team at the Geraldton Hospital wound clinic and have been having regular appointments to treat and dress the wound. The nurses at the wound clinic are wonderful and the care they provide is outstanding.
My wound has been slow to heal and I can't help but feel that if I had been referred to wound clinic from the ED and seen the team earlier, I may have had a different outcome.
Although my experience has been positive and the care I received has been outstanding, I think that the lack of referral from ED is a problem that needs to be addressed.
I was able to find the information I needed to get referred to wound clinic but how many others presenting to ED do not get this information and miss out on vital wound care and support.
Based on my experience, please ensure that all nursing and medical staff that are new to our services are provided with relevant information about referral pathways, so that all patients receive the wonderful care that is available.
