"Lack of cleaning on the ward"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

During my recent 10 day admission to ward G54, Room 6, I was appalled at the state of the room and the half hearted attempt at cleaning by the cleaning staff at SCGH.  At one stage, the toilet bowel was not cleaned with the toilet brush for four days.

The cleaners I saw would come in and haphazardly wipe down my overbed table.  Nothing would be moved just wiped between.  The vanity was wiped down and the basin given a very quick wipe over.  Not once was the bedside table given a wipe, nor the shelves situated behind my bed.  One cleaner would give the toilet a thorough clean using the toilet brush.  However, on one occasion they proceeded to wipe the floor in the room with the same cloth they had cleaned the toilet with.

The other cleaner, as previously mentioned did not use the toilet brush for four days, however when they did they would always throw it on the ground not place it back in its holder.

The toilets flush button was on the wall above the bowl and not once did I witness that being wiped over.

The shower was never once scrubbed just simply a mop was run over it.

Having been a patient at SCGH for over 35 years I can honestly say I have not witnessed such a disgustingly putrid state of a room, and I do have photos to prove this.

As a patient who is immune compromised I was extremely concerned for my health due to the lack of cleaning.

Where is the Cleaning Supervisor?  Do they not inspect their staffs work, if you can call it work.  I honestly can not believe how lazy the cleaning staff are in my opinion, and why are they not held accountable for what I feel to be the filthy state of the room.

Dear beidtg73,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion following your hospital admission at Sir Charles Gairdner hospital. I was sorry to read of your concerns about the lack of cleaning and poor hygiene practices that you witnessed during your hospital stay.

I would encourage you, for any future hospital admissions, to raise these concerns directly with the Clinical Nurse Specialist on the ward, as it is important to address these issues as soon as possible so we can ensure that appropriate cleaning is maintained and monitored.

I can confirm your feedback has been provided to the manager of Cleaning Services who was very disappointed to hear of your poor experience. They have assured me that all the cleaning staff on ward G54 will be assessed to ensure they are following correct processes and additional training and support will be provided as required. We have also increased our auditing of cleaning throughout the hospital to ensure that we maintain the high standard required.

Once again thank you for getting in touch with us.

Warm Regards

Annie Thompson

Acting Executive Director, SCGOPHCG
