"Conflicting advice and care plan for toddler"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Presented to ED on a recent weekend with my toddler who had injured their arm while playing with their sibling. The arm was x-rayed, and we were told no fracture or break was evident by the Dr. We were discharged and given a brace to wear for comfort.

Later that afternoon we were recalled to the hospital after the radiologist reviewed the x-rays and identified a fracture. After another lengthy wait my toddler's arm was put in a plaster cast, we were told to keep on for 6 weeks and to follow up in the orthopedic clinic in a week.

The next morning, I woke up to several missed calls from a private number.  After phoning the switchboard multiple times I was finally able to get through to the ED. A senior radiologist had reviewed the x-rays and found there was no fracture or break. I was asked to return with my toddler to the hospital to have the cast removed but elected to do this myself, as wait times are so long.

I believe weekend ED staff are friendly and kind but inexperienced. I would not return on a weekend.

Dear falcontw98

Thank you for sharing your story regarding the care and treatment your child received at Perth Children’s Hospital.

This must have been a frustrating situation for you and I sincerely apologise for the lack of clarity in relation to your child’s treatment. I would like to look into your child’s case to thoroughly investigate the cause of the conflicting information you received. If you are open to us further investigating the care and treatment provided, I encourage you to contact the Child and Family Engagement Service on 6456 0032 or CAHSFeedback@health.wa.gov.au. We can then provide you with the specific details of your child’s case and elaborate on any concerns you may have.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for bringing your concerns to my attention. I do hope that we hear from you and that your child’s injury has improved since you shared your story.

Yours sincerely
