"Unforgettable journey"

About: Sutherland Hospital / Cooinda Sutherland Hospital / Emergency Department Sutherland Hospital / Warada

(as a relative),

Recently, my parent was suddenly dizzy on the escalator at a Westfield. Luckily my sibling and I were with them and tried to not let them fall. Some nice passers-by helped us straight away as well as the Westfield staff did. They called the ambulance and the paramedic of the Sutherland Hospital came soon after. Thank you to the paramedics, Andrew and Rebecca. Special thanks to Andrew who was funny and caring and made us feel relaxed from the ambulance to the emergency department.

After some tests, an ED doctor said that my parent needed to stay overnight and then my parent was moved to Cooinda ward. Thank you to a nurse, May, who was friendly and helped us whenever we had some queries. Special thank you to Dr Jason who successfully performed the gastroscopy for my parent.

Then my mum was moved to Warada ward after the gastroscopy was done and we met two lovely nurses, Maria and Prakriti. They were really kind people who made patients feel heart warming, and they were really hardworking. And thank you to another nurse, Maddison who helped clarify with a doctor if my parent could eat as normal or not. Thank you to a chaplain, Gaye who gave us warm blessings as she did to other patients.

Meanwhile, two staff members who looked like trainees/students came to explain the report of the gastroscopy. The man said that a copy of the report would be sent to my parent's GP and I showed them the GP's full name and details for their follow-up. However, we found the name was shown as ‘Dr Nil’ on my parent's discharge referral. This minor mistake was so weird with the name of Dr Nil as I believe the staff did not follow up correctly.

Overall the staff we met at the Sutherland Hospital were so nice. We believe everyone was trying to do their best and we are thankful for their help.

Thank you for giving us an unforgettable journey during these three days!

Dear induswk35

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at Sutherland Hospital and I trust your mother is recovering well following her discharge.

I was very pleased to hear that the care provided by the staff members you named, was of the high standard you described. The consideration of the staff certainly demonstrates the kind of care that makes us particularly proud of our employees; as well as their commitment to our organisation’s CORE values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment.

I am pleased to forward your feedback to the Chaplain; the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department and the Nurse Unit Managers of Cooinda and Warada wards to share with their staff.

I am sorry there was an error on the discharge referral and if you like to contact the Consumer Feedback Manager at SESLHD-TSH-Consumerfeedback@health.nsw.gov.au, she will ensure the correct General Practitioner details are listed on your parent’s record.

Once again, thank you for sharing with us your journey in our hospital. I am sure the staff will very much appreciate your kind words of acknowledgement.

Yours sincerely

Vicki Weeden

General Manager
