Upon arrival to collect my parent an altercation occurred with the treating Doctor who was discharging them.
I walked into the General Ward corridor and saw my parent visibly distressed and upset. My parent had been told by the Doctor that they were to be discharged immediately. The Doctor stated the bed was required for another patient. I recall the following summarised conversation then occurred between the Doctor and I (child of patient).
Doctor - There is nothing more we can do for your parent. Your parent also refused to have the operation in Perth.
Myself – My parent is not allowed to as they are underweight. Surgeons have stated they refuse to operate on my parent as their lung would most likely collapse as well as their heart due to anaesthetic. They are too frail.
Doctor - No your parent is making that decision themselves.
Myself – I feel you obviously have not read my parent’s notes then.
Doctor - I don't have to.
I then proceeded to question the Doctor’s professionalism and I felt they became very abrupt and rude. As I was speaking and asking the Doctor to notify Palliative Care they walked away and I recall stated that they’re not doing this and they do not need to call anyone. I’m too aggressive and they don't have to talk to me anymore. The Doctor then walked away and I stated that I was still talking to them. The Doctor then told me to go and make a complaint and that they had told my parent the same thing. I then asked for the Doctor’s name and I recall they aggressively shoved their name badge in my face and told me to take a photo of it so I wouldn't forget. The Doctor stated throughout my conversation that my parent has been aggressive. The nurse apologised about the whole situation. The nurse then encouraged us to make a complaint about their mannerisms and attitude towards patients and in this case my parent. The Doctor did not communicate or state that my parent was being discharged, the nurse was not even aware. My parent did not want to be discharged and voiced that they were still feeling very sick. My parent was discharged anyway.
My parent was also given a bag of medication that was for a different patient. No medication incident occurred because we told the Doctor this wasn't for us however I recall they abruptly stated it was. When we got home, my parent's support worker noticed it seemed to be a completely different patient’s medication.
