"Leukaemia"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Haematology (Anaemia and Blood Cancer) Care

(as the patient),

Three months ago I developed a blood nose (nothing crazy) and also had picked up the flu probably the worst I’ve ever had and just couldn’t shake it. I booked into see my rural GP and was given some antibiotics and a referral to see the local ED and possibly get my nose cauterised. After getting some blood tests done this is where my whole world got turned upside down. My blood stats were terrible I had no immune system left and very close to zero (2.5) platelet count so my body couldn’t fight off any infection or stop any bleeds. Leukaemia was the major possibility.

After two ambulances I was transferred to Royal Perth Emergency where as soon as I arrived they immediately explained the situation and what their plan was for the day for correct diagnosis. I was taken to ward 10C the Haematology ward. After a bone marrow biopsy I was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia APML and was put on a course of chemo straight away. All I could think of was my wife and two young kids, emotionally I was a wreck. The doctors told me that the use of Arsenic as the treatment for this type of Leukaemia has about a 98%. For the first few weeks my body and emotions went on a roller coaster ride these were the critical weeks to see if the treatment was working. I did have several reactions to the treatment but with the help of the nurses and Pharmacist we managed to keep them under control. During the treatment I was sent out for several X-rays and given multiple bags of Platelets Cryo Magnesium Potassium and Red Blood. After about five weeks of treatment everyday my blood stats started going back up by themselves and recently I went into remission and rang the bell and was allowed to go home after spending 44 days in hospital.

I can’t thank the nurses enough for the way they looked after me, not just looking after my medical needs but also for looking after my mental health and I believe this is very important and keeping a positive attitude. After being with these beautiful people you can’t help but build a bond with them. When I was feeling down they would always come in to listen and take the time to make sure I was ok and it didn’t matter what time of day or night it was they were there. The staff at Heamatology reception were amazing they helped me with all my paperwork including PATS and forms for insurance and chased it up until it was done.

Thank you for helping me get through my treatment and getting me back to my family. I will be popping in to say hello on a regular basis 😃😃
