"My parent's hospital stay"

About: Albany Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as a relative),

My parent had a total hip replacement recently. They're elderly. Its a massive operation for an older person. Very scary, painful and quite traumatising.

Everything went well, the surgeon Dr Simon was brilliant, the theatre staff amazing, everything up until this incident had been great.
My parent was day one post operation. The catheter had been removed during the day. My parent needed to use the toilet overnight which required nursing assistance. The nursing staff assisted my parent on to the commode. What they failed to do was place a pan on the commode chair to catch the urine! They also failed to tell my parent they had not put a pan on the chair and they were going to wheel them to the toilet.

This resulted in my parent urinating on the floor. The nurse telling my parent they had to stop. Well my parent couldn't stop.

I was absolutely disgusted when my parent told me what had happened the night before.

I understand nurses are rushed and short staffed. So perhaps I think they feel they need to do things quickly and not seemingly explain to the patients, expecting they know what's happening.

I feel this is not good enough.  My parent has just been through a major surgery and all that needed to happen was a pan on the chair and ensuring your patient understood what was going on. Simple fix.

It was very embarrassing for my my parent for this to happen. The lack of communication resulted in extra time having to be spent cleaning up an unnecessary mess.  I feel this situation could have been avoided.

I am absolutely horrified and would like this discussed further.
