"Duty of Care and staff member."

About: Cohuna District Hospital

(as a relative),

Contacted the hospital recently to enquire about a family member as they were not well and were to be from what I gathered to be transferred to a regional hospital.

In my opinion, the nurse that I spoke to was less than helpful and their people skills left a lot to be desired. I totally understand that I could not be told of my family member's condition as I’m not an immediate family member.  However due to the family not being close by, a bit of empathy would of sufficed. I myself work in hospital and I would hope that our nursing staff would treat patients and their families with a bit of friendliness at least considering the circumstances.

My second issue is this family member is often unwell and I would like to try to understand why they had to find another family member to drive them to the regional hospital.

Why was there no ambulance available in the area to take them. What happens if they had some type of medical condition during that 40 minute trip. Where is the hospital's Duty of Care? This has happened on another occasion. Then to make matters worse my family member gets there only to be left sitting in Emergency Dept for few hours….. not good enough all round in my opinion.

Dear Fedup123,

I apologise for your experience, and I thank you for your feedback, which supports the CDH Speaking Up For Safety program.

CDH committed to our C.A.R.E. values and excellent health care for our community.

CDH has also launched the R.E.A.C.H. protocol for families to escalate care if they are worried about a loved one. This information is displayed at each patient's bedside, should you wish to escalate through the REACH protocol in the future.

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to a concern as they occur.

While it can be very frustrating when staff are unable to disclose information over the telephone to anyone other than Next of Kin, please be reassured that CDH staff are very dedicated to their patients and care deeply for their welfare.

Please feel free to reach out to me, should you wish to have a more personalised response to your particular concerns.

Kind Regards

Wendy Lunghusen
