"Motorcycle vs Car and my awesome care"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department Bentley Hospital Denmark Health Service Royal Flying Doctor Service Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department Royal Perth Hospital / State Major Trauma Unit Ward 3G St John Ambulance WA

(as the patient),

Recently I was riding through Denmark with my mate on our motorcycles heading to the Denmark tavern for a quiet pint. Came around the bend when a tourist decided he would like to change direction on my side of the road. Ambulance to Denmark Health Campus, ambulance to Albany Health Campus, RFDS to RPH ED and the State Trauma Ward. This starts the story. Broken (R) foot, 7 ribs, sternum, deflated lung, a bit of a broken rib bruises my heart, dislocated (L) shoulder and many cuts n bruises. After arriving at RPH ED, being sorted by the Nurse manager and seen with great care, it was off to the State Trauma Unit.

Note: Nurse Les at RPH ED - loose lips sinks ships. Remember, you are sworn to secrecy under the Defence Force Secrecies Act :-) after receiving secret information from me whilst on some gnarly drugs about my good friend and fellow ED Nurse David (Macca) and his finger or lack thereof.

After a few surgeries on my leg and lacerations to my (L) elbow it was off to Bentley Hospital for further care. Through all these departments I have witnessed the work of my guardian angels nursing me on the path back to normality (if that can be achieved), the amazing skills these true professionals have in surgery, nursing and in general care of me. This is being written on the eve of being transported back to Albany Health Campus for rehab and integration back to my house after some house modifications to allow for wheelchair access.

I owe my life to my friend who managed the accident scene, the amazing ambo's who got me to where I needed to be, the Doctors and Nurses who looked after me, my amazing wife for sorting all my needs and being there for me and my amazing friends for their offers of support. To Macca, Nicole and Dan for keeping me real. You are my rocks.

The slow road to recovery begins.

Update posted by ScooberPatient (the patient)

Thank you Ben for taking the time to read my story and the time to reply. If I were to give any feedback that I considered needs attention it would be in the area of room cleanliness and meal preparation at Bentley which was definitely an area that, in my opinion, needs improvement. As a patient with all that is going on both physically and mentally the last thing I wanted to be confronted with was seemingly inedible food. The food, especially soup I felt was more than bad. Everything else was fantastic.

Hope this helps others.

Regards

Dear ScooberPatient

Thank you for taking the time during your recovery to share your story. You certainly have had the opportunity to experience the full range of health care providers and support services here in the Great Southern and in Perth. We have shared your story with all of the staff involved in your care who are very pleased to hear about your recovery from your accident.

We are really proud of our team in Denmark Hospital; it is a small hospital but we are so proud to hear how well they looked after you and the other people involved in this incident, with professionalism and care. We are pleased that your immediate health care needs were met and then you were assessed and swiftly moved to the place best able to care for you, the State Trauma Ward.

We wish you all the best for your continued recovery and safe return to health.

Yours sincerely

Dear ScooberPatient,

Thank you for providing this additional feedback on your experience at Bentley Health Service, it certainly is helpful. We aim to provide high standards of cleanliness across our services, and to provide food that is appetizing and meets nutritional standards. We regularly audit our cleaning standards and meals provided to patients in efforts to ensure these are meeting expectations. I am very sorry to hear that we did not achieve this for you, and have ensured that your feedback has been provided to our cleaning and catering staff as part of our efforts to continually improve our services.

I am very pleased to hear that everything else was fantastic!

Once again I wish you well with your recovery.

Kind regards
