"The most amazing group of women at Bunbury maternity"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

As a first time mum with a history of failed pregnancies and a lot of time spent in and out of hospital through my life I went into bunbury regional maternity ward with no real expectations of any kind and a mind set of "just another hospital trip".. boy was I wrong!

I had an induced birth so came in that night early and the first amazing midwife I met was Shannon, Shannon immediately made me feel like I was among friends and people I could trust, she was honest about her experience as a nurse and midwife and was happy to seek a second opinion where she felt it was needed and just was a person you could tell genuinely cared for her patients. once I was settled in for the night I met the second amazing midwife, Maddy! Maddy was amazing! she had a strong confidence in her role and just makes you feel so at ease as if a storm could roll in at that very moment and Maddy would know exactly what to do, this girl is a fire and I hope she never loses that! Maddy talked me through what to expect and in the morning took me to settle into the birthing suite and left me in the very capable hands of Naomi.

Naomi got straight to business and together we rode through 11 hours of active labour, she made me feel like my own mum was there with me, always making sure baby was happy and ready for her journey (even when I was sooky) she held my hand when I needed and gave me space to enjoy my experience, Naomi has a world of knowledge and experience and I couldn't have asked for better!

Then it was time to get down to the nitty gritty and the lovely Shannon was back on shift and at my side.. when I tell you this girl put her whole heart into making sure me and my baby were safe and comfortable I truly mean it, I will never forget the comfort and support and raw sense of woman energy I felt in that room with just me my partner and Shannon, in the scariest moment of my life I had never felt so calm and safe and protected and I will never have the words to truly thank her for that (but hopefully one day a cocktail on me will help).

Once my baby girl was in my arms and all was said and done it was Maddy’s shift again.

Honestly that next 8 hours was a blur of so many things that I don't remember all that well but I remember just knowing that Maddy was gonna get me through and she did, she fed baby when I couldn't, she helped me express while I was hardly awake, she was there to advocate for me when I felt like something was wrong and when you feel like everything is a haze, Maddy is the girl you want in your corner! She truly got me through and I wasn't even with it enough to thank her, but Maddy if you ever see this…thank you! And I hope we get the chance to hang out one day you are amazing!

These are just the core women that made my experience one that I will look back on with love and gratitude and absolutely no fear of birth or hospitals but it’s not to say the entire staff were not wonderful because they absolutely were sensational and their work is so so appreciated and to the supervisor Chantelle who just had all hands on deck at all times, girl I don't know how you do it but you are amazing! You had so much to watch and listen to and phones and questions to answer yet there you were at every turn, checking in, advocating for me, calling to get me the best information possible last minute! You are one brilliant woman!

So after that novel of a story I really just want to say a massive thank you to the whole team, I walked in a first time mum with no idea that I would be walking out having met women that now feel like family. thank you for my baby girl and looking after us so well, thank you for your kindness and thank you for never taking your eye off the ball no matter how tired you were!

love attendantfc33, and family!

Dear attendantfc33,

Thank you for taking the time to write to care opinion. Being a first time Mum can be a little daunting and hospital stays overwhelming. I am so happy that your experience from admission to birth to postnatal was so positive. It is lovely to hear that Shannon, Maddi, Naomi and Chantelle were all able to provide you with amazing care and give you confidence throughout this journey. It is lovely when we can provide some continuity of care within our busy unit.

Congratulations on the birth of your first child and I wish you and your family all the best as you settle into the next chapter in your parenting journey. Take care.

Nicola Tuckey

A/Clinical Midwifery Manager, Bunbury Maternity
