"C-Section Birth"

About: Avon Valley Midwifery Group Practice

(as the patient),

I would love to have my elective c section birth at Northam hospital but for some reason the hospital won’t allow it. It would be so much better for me and my family if we didn’t have to travel so far to have our second child. My first c-section birth in another hospital was extremely traumatic and I’d much prefer to be here with all of the midwives and nurses that I’m more comfortable.

After speaking with my midwives, they’ve informed me that there are OB’s who can perform the surgery, anaesthetists who are trained in c-section births and a whole team of staff who are prepared, yet it apparently isn’t an option for Wheatbelt mums to have this preferred birth method in Northam.

I believe a mother should have the option of every type of birth method possible and be comfortable with it!

Dear lupusjq44

Thank you for feedback regarding the provision of planned caesarean section birth services at Northam Hospital.

We are very sorry that we are unable to offer this service at this time at Northam Hospital for local women.

Northam Hospital currently offers an excellent Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) service, providing antenatal and postnatal care to all women of the area, and some non-caesarean birthing services for lower risk. We are aiming to grow our local maternity and birthing services over time and are currently investigating the possibility of offering an elective (planned) caesarean birthing service at Northam with all the supports and clinical services required, including access to paediatricians, on site or by telehealth. I’m sorry that this service will not be available for the birth of your baby.

We are always very keen to hear from our clients and work with local women to co-design services so we can provide the maternity and birthing care and services that are needed in the communities we serve. As we plan for future caesarean birthing services, we would welcome your advice and input if you have the time.

We wish you all the very best for your upcoming birthing experience and hope that it is all you wish. Avon Valley (Northam) MGP midwives will continue to offer support and care for you, your baby and family before the birth and when you return home.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback, if you would like to talk about this issue further please contact our Regional Clinical Midwife Consultant Philippa Reppington on 0427 378 599.

Trenton
