"Not enough nurses to assist all patients in a timely manner"

About: Warren Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

All the team at Warren hospital in Manjimup I dealt with were amazing, they did the best they could under the circumstances of only 1 nurse morning/nights.

My child was on iv for 8 days and on many occasions had to wait a period of time to get their iv changed/swapped over due to the nurse assisting other patients or having to help in the emergency department. You could tell they were run off their feet and doing the best they could.

We also had an incident with an elderly patient who I assumed had dementia urinating in the side of our room in front of my child. The nurses do not have an adequate team to have someone sitting with this patient 24/7 and they were constantly wandering and the nurses were trying their best directing the patient back to their room and trying to supervise them while attending to all other patient’s needs.

All patients are different and require different amount of care/attention, the elderly patient made my child feel not safe we ended up changing rooms. Having the patient there without allowing to roster an extra nurse to be able to fully care for them and supervise them is, in my opinion, putting other patients' safety and health at risk.

Dear contollerqs83

I hope that your child has recovered from their recent illness and hospital stay.

I am sorry to hear that you had a frightening experience with another patient. Thank you for identifying the staffing needs at the hospital.

This is a multi-factorial and sometimes challenging issue within all healthcare settings.

I’d like to meet with you and discuss your experience.

Please contact either myself or Claudia Tschopp (Clinical Nurse Managers) at Warren Health Service on 0419380750 to meet and discuss your experience.

Kind regards

Sharon Johnson
