My father is presently in Gippsland Base hospital in Sale Victoria and his care and medical attention is very good I have no complaints, but the disgusting condition of the main entrance is, in my opinion, a disgrace. It seems patients and visitors use this area for smoking and leave their cigarette butts everywhere right under a sign saying no smoking in hospital grounds. I feel it’s an utter disgrace and embarrassment for all.

I approached reception about the situation and response was they have told management about the smoking but nothing is done. When reception try to enforce the no smoking they are faced with hostile smokers so they are not willing to do anything. I also note that staff have to leave the grounds to smoke, I think double standards. I hope people within hospital management read this story and remedy the problem.

Hi nuthatchfr55,

Thank you for raising your concern regarding the smoking that occurs outside the front door of the hospital. This is an ongoing issue for our teams to manage which we aim to handle with care.

We do ask that people not smoke on hospital grounds but also ask that our staff, when making this request directly to people in the area, not get into a confrontation with patients and family members. As you will appreciate this has the potential to place our staff at risk.

We will, of course, continue to pay attention to the cleanliness in the area while while continuing to encourage patients and their visitors to not smoke in the area.
