"Ongoing experience with end of life laws"

About: McEwen

(as a carer),

This story is still on going and more or less to express frustration about the end of life laws that medical people have to navigate.

There is no doubt that the care given to my wife has been very good with in the guide lines of the law and medical ethics but this does nothing to satisfy her wishes or that of the family’s.

My wife wishes for her life to end to find peace and the family only want peace for her but have the frustration that the medical people are bound by law and can only keep her reasonably comfortable.

There is no added value in this way of living for either my wife or the family and none of us see any value in this way of life other than the doctors and nurses have to carry out their duties as bound by law.

My wife begs for her life to end so that she may find peace but there is nothing that the medical people can do.

We admit that we should have done more towards finding our way about end of life treatment but have found that this is a very long and drawn out process.

From what the nurses speak about in the ward we are certainly not the first people to experience this frustration about how a loved one is treated at the end of life and doubt if my comment will make a great amount of difference but at least it is out there and I am prepared for any criticism that this may get.

Usually you would expect that medical treatment would add to the value of life but there is no added value in this way of treatment at all and just causes added anxiety for the family and my wife.

In our eyes this is unjust and undignified that a lady of such strong character and principals and has added so much to our life has to end hers in such a way where she is lying in a bed where she doesn't want to be not sure of her surrounds and at times have conversation that is just border line dementia.

We thank the nurses for doing the best possible job they can under the circumstances but hate the system for what it is doing to my wife.
