"Patient experience"

About: Peel Health Campus / Short stay Unit

(as a relative),

My grandparent was admitted to Peel health campus and transferred to the Rivers ward awaiting a bed on the wards recently. During about two days, my grandparent was only given 2 meals and it was discovered the following morning that they were in the system as middle-aged (they are double this) despite multiple tests and medications being given.

Recently, my grandparent was given dinner and asked the nurse to heat it up as it was stone cold. My grandparent could then overhear the nurses at the nurse’s station seemingly mocking them. My grandparent got extremely upset and when confronting them about it I believe the nurse threatened my grandparent, saying they were taking my grandparent to court. This is an elderly patient who is now extremely traumatised. I recall my grandparent was told that there is a black mark on their file now forever and that they were moving them to another ward because of bad behaviour.

The level of care and empathy shown from staff at the hospital is disgraceful.

Dear Relative55

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. I was very sorry to read of your grandparent’s recent experience at Peel Health Campus and sincerely apologise that we did not meet their expectations on this occasion.

Please be reassured that all staff employed by Ramsay Health Care are required to follow the Code of Conduct, which includes ensuring communication with our patients and visitors is respectful, empathetic and professional at all times. I was saddened to read that you felt this did not occur and that your grandparent was not listened to. I have asked the managers of the emergency department to remind all staff of the importance of communication and the impact this can have on our patients and their loved ones.

I want to assure you I take your concerns very seriously and would like the opportunity to investigate your grandparent’s unfortunate experience thoroughly.

I strongly encourage you or your grandparent to reach out to Tracey Taylor at (08) 9531 8580 or email TaylorTracey@ramsayhealth.com.au to enable this to occur so we can better understand the circumstances of their experience.

We hope to hear from you soon and thank you again for sharing your story so that we can continually improve the care and service we provide.

Adrian Bautista

Chief Executive Officer
