"Disability aids"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Kalgoorlie Outpatient Clinic

(as the patient),

Recently I have had to attend the local hospital, and due to long term disability and recent health problems, my mobility, strength and balance have been affected, making it possible for me to notice things I previously didn't give much thought to.

On my recent visit to Outpatients/Chemotherapy I used the public toilets.  This toilet was lower than I was  accustomed to at home (maybe for children to be able to use) the cubicle was large enough to accommodate a walker or other aid, but once sat on the toilet there were no hand rails to assist you to get off (not sure if there was a help buzzer either) and due to the size of the cubicle there was nothing within reach to grab, with bad joints and little strength in my knees or hands, it was extremely difficult and painful, and took me some time for me to arise from the 'throne' .

My recommendation would be that all public toilets within hospital grounds had hand rails fitted, after all, the general visitors/clients to these places include the elderly, disabled, frail and sick.

Dear blackbirdnp36,

Thank you for telling us your story and about your recent experience at the hospital. I am sorry you found the toilet facilities difficult to use.

I know there are four rooms provided adjacent in the Outpatient waiting room. These are a parent room, a male toilet, a female toilet and an accessibility toilet. I will make a point of liaising with the facility team to make sure that all of these facilities are well signed and that the accessibility toilet has all the required railings and call bells in place. Sometimes, these are removed from service whilst they are being repaired etc.

I will also follow up with the administration team to make sure the clerks are aware of the facilities that are in their areas too, so they can direct patients to the most suitable ones.

I hope these actions will help not only yourself, but also many others that attend our services in the future too.

Kind regards

Alicia
