"Emergency Care at RPH and Respiratory."

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

A few months ago I asked my husband to drive me to RPH Emerg. because my breathing wasn't right, I felt really weak and I had had work done at RPH on my throat and thought it might be related. It was a short wait until I was brought in. They were quick and thorough and kind at admission.

Inside ED my vitals were checked and an early 30s doctor said I should have a CT scan. I was feeling a bit better and ED started to get quite busy, with trauma and some brought in by police. I thought I should go home, thinking I was taking time from those who'd need it more. The doctor asked me to please have the CT scan first. So I did and he was right, it was bilateral PE and so I spent the next 3-4 days in Respirology on blood thinners and getting help to walk as I was quite weak.

They were very kind and kept me informed. I was very distressed when they said it would take months to break the embolisms. They told me I should still be able to have an op I was hoping to have in the coming months.  It was scary but I had full confidence in the doctors and nurses on the ward.

Dear ink6306

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. I was sorry to read it was such a scary and worrying time for you.

It was pleasing to hear you felt the staff were kind and kept you informed and I am glad the doctor encouraged you to have a computed tomography (CT) scan, even though you thought you should go home. Your story assures me that the staff in the Emergency Department and on Ward 9c are continually striving to provide high quality, patient centred care.

I wish you all the best and hope you are recovering well.

Kind regards

Ben Noteboom
