"Covid and mask wearing"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My parent had to be admitted to SCGH recently, via the ED, for a short stay procedure. I was very surprised to find that staff, visitors and patients in the ED weren’t required to wear masks, which I believe contradicts the information on the hospital’s website (published November 21). As I understand it, the ED is included in the list of locations within the hospital where mask wearing is required. My parent has cancer and therefore immune compromised.

I asked a nurse for clarification on the mask rules and I recall they said it was the choice of each staff member. They also told me that covid was ‘rife’ within the hospital, that there were covid patients in the ED waiting area, and in the exact area we were in (which was visible as curtains and signage was around one particular bed), and throughout the entire hospital. I recall they also said that they now treated covid ‘like a cold’. Given that information, I asked if we could request that staff treating my parent wear masks (due to them having cancer & other immune compromised issues) to which I recall the nurse said no, as it was personal choice and unless my parent was having chemo it wasn’t mandatory. I found this extraordinary.

As we waited, a paramedic came in wearing a mask and also asked the team about mask wearing as the paramedic thought it was mandatory. There was obvious confusion, but it feels inappropriate and almost negligent to become so lax with infection control and mask wearing, when it seems Perth is currently experiencing a covid wave (as declared by the Chief Health Officer) and when staff are telling patients it is ‘rife’ within the hospital. Patients deserve to be protected when receiving healthcare. Additionally it makes no sense to not implement more stringent infection control within the hospital….surely SCGH doesn’t want the additional burden of patients contracting covid in hospital which could leave to a longer stay?! Please, do better. For noting, my parent and I kept our masks on throughout.

Dear Perth resident79,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience following your parents recent visit to the Emergency Department (ED) at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH). I can appreciate your concerns about mask wearing and the increased risk of infection given your parent has cancer and is immunocompromised. We know that Covid-19 cases are currently on the rise in WA and within our community.

I am sorry for any confusion or lack of clarity regarding the information available on the website and via staff regarding the use of face masks in ED. I can confirm the Department of Health have advised the use of face masks is not currently mandated in Western Australia, although it is recommended for hospital staff working in high-risk areas which include ED. The WA health guidelines can be accessed here: https://www.health.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/Coronavirus/COVID19-information-for-health-professionals.

Please be assured we have a screening policy in place in ED to ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors. The WA health system has moved to ensure that all respiratory and airborne viruses are assessed and tested and then decisions about isolation and mask wearing are made.

Thank you again for getting in touch. Our health service does appreciate your feedback, and we would like to reassure you of our commitment to ensure our ED remains a safe environment for all our patients, visitors and staff.

Warm regards

Jodi Graham

Hello Jodi, appreciate your response. However, I do feel that you are missing a key point. The hospital’s own website has a story on the homepage, published on November 21 (and still live at the time of writing this), listing the areas of the hospital where mask wearing is ‘required’. One of the areas listed is in the ED. If they aren’t ‘required’ in the ED then I feel the wording needs to be changed, to manage expectations of those visiting the ED. https://www.scgh.health.wa.gov.au/News/2023/11/21/masks

I have also noted that in the CHO’s/Dept of Health media statement published on November 17, stated that staff and visitors ‘must wear’ masks in the high risk clinical settings, and while caring for vulnerable patients in critical care settings. https://www.health.wa.gov.au/Media-releases/2023/November/WA-hospital-staff-mask-up-for-COVID
