"Dialysis WA"

About: Midwest Health

(as a relative),

My step parent and their doctor had made the decision to start dialysis. Unfortunately, from Geraldton, the home attempts and hospital attempts at dialysis were unsuccessful so my parent and spouse had to be transferred to Perth. This was to acquire a working port on my parent’s body for the dialysis.

This was 14 months ago and they are still in Perth. Living in a hotel and requiring dialysis every 2-3 days with countless operations trialling new ports, clearing out veins etc.

The problem doesn’t necessarily lie with the doctors and specialists, its more that my parent and their spouse have to live in a hotel room for now over a year, being told there are no dialysis machines available in Geraldton or anywhere else for that matter except Perth. PATS have graciously covered costs of accommodation and transport to appointments, but there is no quality of life not just for the patient, but for the carer as well.

My other parent developed a lung clot due to these living conditions and both their mental health is suffering. They keep their rental in Geraldton in the hopes they will get home, but it doesnt look good. I feel this is not good enough for WA and needs to be looked into...regards Changecountryhelp

Dear Changecountryhelp

Thank you for reaching out on Care Opinion and advocating for your family.

I was very sorry to read of the difficulties your step parent and their partner have had obtaining the dialysis treatment they need and the additional challenges that has put on their health. Unfortunately, there are some limitations in the service that can be offered at Geraldton Hospital, or at home and in certain circumstances dialysis in Perth is the only option available.

I would very much like to speak with your step parent and their partner to ensure we are doing all we can to investigate any viable treatment options closer to home. I’d be grateful if you’d ask them to get in contact with me whenever they can. My name is Nathalie Pass, I am the Coordinator of Nursing - Surgical Services & Ambulatory Care. I can be reached on (08) 9956 2329 or emailed at MwConssac@health.wa.gov.au

Thank you again for sharing your step parent’s story and I do hope to hear from them soon.

Regards

Nathalie Pass
