"Maternity admission"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Maternity Ward

(as the patient),

I cannot fault the lovely staff on maternity - the midwives, nurses, PCAs and clerical staff were incredible, kind and attentive even though they were short staffed. I am forever grateful for the care that myself and my daughter received.

It would have been lovely if the rooms were big enough to include a recliner chair for my partner to stay overnight in. It was a very special time for our new family, as is for all families welcoming a new baby, it was really a shame they had to go home each night.

During labour I had the wireless ctg attached as my baby needed to be monitored, however this was then taken away from me to be used on another patient as the ward only had one. For whatever reason the other patient took priority, which meant I was then connected to wires, limiting how I could continue to labour. I later found out the other patient refused the wireless ctg anyway. It was a massive interruption for my birthing process. Perhaps more funding for equipment on maternity ward might be an idea.

I am very disappointed with the meals I received. As someone with dietary requirements, the hospital kitchen were unable to meet my needs adequately. I could list a fault in all the meals I received. One example - as a vegetarian, I was given cold meat sandwiches. They then provided a vegetarian ‘meal’ which was a small mound of rice with veg that wouldn’t be enough for a toddler. I did not receive one balanced meal (protein, fat and carbs) during my 3 night admission. For a breastfeeding mother who had just had a very long labour and delivery, what was served was really inappropriate and inadequate. As a health professional, I’m actually quite embarrassed that the menus/kitchen are unable to accommodate for someone with dietary needs and preferences that deviate from the norm. Disappointing Kalgoorlie Health Campus, in my opinion, do better.

I’d like to add - I am only sharing my experience in hope that enough change will occur and this won’t happen for the next woman, person, patient.

Hi Skdnejw8383,

Congratulations on the arrival of your new baby and thank you for sharing your experience at Kalgoorlie Health Campus (KHC). Our team on Maternity Ward have always been commended for providing safe patient-centred care and ensuring patient needs are at the core of the service we provide.

I appreciate your suggestions and I want to express that it was not our intention to cause stress at such a vulnerable time. I understand that the equipment utilised restricted your movement and have fed this information back to our Maternity Services Manager. We look forward to exploring options to expand the availability of this equipment type in the future.

I understand that visitation times can be limiting for some families. The wellbeing of our patients and staff is paramount, and our visiting times allow for our patients to rest and the capacity for staff to change over shifts safely.

Patient nutrition is vital for recovery and I would like to apologise for not being able to meet your dietary requirements during your stay at the Maternity Ward. I have shared your feedback with Hotel Services (Kitchen) and our dieticians, who will review our menu options and look at how to better accommodate for varied dietary needs.

I hope we have another opportunity to demonstrate our passion in providing high quality health care in the Goldfields. If you would like further information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dulcie Pahewa via email Dulcie.Pahewa@health.wa.gov.au or phone (08) 9080 5817.

Kind Regards

Dulcie Pahewa
