"Went to hospital as I had hurt my arm"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Presented to Karratha Health Campus recently as I had hurt my arm lifting my motor bike. My arm looked deformed and was in pain. Was told by two doctors that my arm was a sprain and prescribed medication? I explained I was in pain and the arm didn't look right and I couldn't get an ultra sound until around 10 days later, I was advised to come through ED as I could get one quicker. I recall the two doctors said I didn't need one. I walked out of their feeling very angry. My partner works in healthcare and asked if there was any cancelations and lucky there was that day.

My arm had snapped the distal biceps tendon and was sent to Perth for a MRI and Surgery. I had to have a escort follow me to Perth as I need surgery and my Partner had to take time from their work with no pay as they had used all their leave looking after our grandchild in our care. The only good thing was for PATs who were great who helped book our flights.

In all of this, I feel if I had followed instructions from the two doctors I would of been further away from my treatment and a full recovery.

Dear eaterbx39

Thank you for coming forward with your concerns regarding the care and treatment you received for your arm injury at the Karratha Health Campus Emergency Department.

I am very sorry that you have been left feeling not listened to by the two hospital doctors, resulting in you not receiving the assessment and care needed for your biceps tendon injury. I am pleased to hear that you were able to source both the imaging and corrective surgery required, and hope that your recovery is progressing well. The MRI scan and surgery would have had to occur in Perth, and it is good to hear that PATS were able to support you and your carer appropriately with travel.

I would appreciate being able to speak with you so that I can learn more about what happened and initiate a thorough review with our medical team. At the completion of the review, and if you are willing, I would like to involve you in discussions relating to any outcomes or recommendations resulting from the review. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience on 08 9144 7652 or via email at: Matthew.Wells@health.wa.gov.au

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your story. I do hope that I hear from you in the near future.

Kind regards,

Matt Wells
