"Treatment for myeloma"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / ASB 4N - Haematology and Oncology Ward Prince of Wales Hospital / L2/L3 NCCC - Cancer & Haematology Clinics - Outpatient Department Prince of Wales Hospital / L4 NCCC - Haematology Oncology Day Centre (HODC)

(as the patient),

After being diagnosed with smouldering myeloma in 2020, I required treatment in mid 2023. This was a shock as I was hoping to "kick the can down the road" for as long as possible. I am extremely grateful to the nurses in the COT team at Prince of Wales. The clinical manager (?) was very understanding, patient and provided excellent education sessions. It gave me great comfort to know I was in capable hands. My doctor is very understanding and reassuring.

Having seen relatives go through treatment, I was extremely apprehensive. I did not "google" anything as this would have created more anxiety for me. I had to trust my health practitioners in the treatment plan. I had a lot of activities in 2023, which couldn't be moved and the team planned a lot treatments around this.

When I went for my stem cell collection, the nurses I saw at HODC were excellent. I thought the stell cell collection process was tough. I knew the next step in the treatment process would be tough, but I guess I was hoping it wouldn't be.

When I had to receive my PICC line although the timings and dates kept changing which increased my nerves on the next process, overall it worked out.

When I went for my stem cell infusion (?) and chemo, the process was extremely tough mentally and physically for me. I had to stay in hospital for over 2 weeks. During the 2 weeks stay, I was "locked down" for 5 days which was mentally tough. No visitors. Nurses in hazmat while completing my observations.

The nurses I saw on the Haematology and Oncology ward at Prince of Wales Acute Building Services Level 4 were wonderful. The Haematology registrars were very understanding.

I still have a long path ahead of me but the health workers I've met have been amazing. I can really feel they are there to care and provide the best outcome for me.
