"Failed care in ED"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented 4 times with pain and issues after my c section at kemh the second time I was sent for a Ultrasound over my wound that was showing signs of being open then left to sit in the waiting room for hours with the jell still on my wound.

It took 4 visits to be taken seriously. I had a bad infection under my wound and cellulitis from half way up my stomach to half way down my thighs and the ed doctor still said to me they were only admitting me for 24 hours because I couldn't deal with the pain. I seemed to get the same doctor every time besides 1 and the 1 time I didn't have them was the only time I feel I received the correct care.

Once I was admitted and moved to the ward I received better care unless it was busy which would mean I was seemingly forgotten about meaning my pain relief and antibiotics were late or forgotten about.

I was in hospital for a week and needed heavy medical care for 12 weeks after I left hospital and less regular care for another 5.

I was never told how bad my infection was until I left the hospital and had check ups at a different hospital who explained how serious it was.

This happened nearly 9 months ago and I am still healing physically and mentally

Not once was I offered a way to make a complaint about the ED doctor even tho the doctor on the ward said they were so sorry it took so long to get the right care, and that it shouldn't of happened.

In my opinion, there needs to be a better way then paper towel and water to clean up after an ultrasound if your going to make people wait hours to be seen.

Dear orangenz34,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out and share your experience of such an upsetting journey following the birth of your baby. I was deeply saddened to read your description of the attention you received during your multiple visits to the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) Emergency Centre and during your admission, and how it has left you feeling uncared for. I am truly sorry that this was your experience.

This situation has understandably left you feeling unheard, and if it would be helpful, I would like to offer you the opportunity to speak to or meet with a senior member of our team to discuss your concerns further. This will help us to explore the issues you have raised so that we can take steps to prevent them from happening again. If you feel comfortable doing so, please contact our Consumer Liaison Service on 6458 1444, or email them on WNHS.CLS@health.wa.gov.au and they will be happy to make arrangements.

Once again, I am very sorry and I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,

Dr George Eskander
