I was involved in a bbq gas cylinder explosion in a domestic setting and was admitted to the local ED with severe burns to my right arm, face and ear. I was admitted immediately which I felt was great and see by the ED nurses who put me in a cold shower for 20 mins. I had already been showering at home in cold water for 30 mins prior to presentation. ED nurses took my bp and provided paracetamol initially. I felt the nurses did a great job treating the burns with silver nitrate dressing, calming me, and explaining what was happening.
No photos were taken of the burns. I was given buprenorphine and ketorolac. I had to expressively ask what these were for prior to administration.
I didn’t know who Dr on call was. There was a person wandering around ED dressed in a t-shirt and shorts with sandals who I found later was the Dr on call. From what I saw, they had no badges, tunic, instruments or other indications as a way for a patient to know who they were. At no time did they introduce themself, speak directly with me or explain their role. They performed no checks on me and stood back seemingly just observing the nurses dress the burns before they left the hospital to get their dinner, which they then ate in the ED section of the hospital in full view of patients. I though this was pretty ordinary behaviour.
No airway checks were performed which I though would have been relevant with a gas explosion and gas possible inhalation.
I was discharged within an hour/130 of being admitted and told to rest by the ED nurses. I felt they were great and worked amongst themselves to help me, and to my knowledge didn't consult nor speak with the t-shirt person whom I now know was the Dr. Prior to leaving the Dr came to me with a prescription for oxycontone and I recall said 'here, here's the good stuff'. They did not explain dosage or contraindications for this drug. I was alarmed given the recent media attention to this drug and addiction Subsequently I didnt take it and just put up with the pain.
