"Still waiting for surgery"

About: Fremantle Hospital and Health Service

(as the patient),

I was referred to South Metropolitan Health Service about 8 months ago for general surgery. My referral has been accepted as a Priority 2 which I understand means that my surgery should have happened within 3 months. Not only has my surgery not happened, but it also hasn't been scheduled, I don't have an appointment, and I haven't received even one piece of information saying how much longer I'll be waiting.

I've been to the GP who can do nothing. In the meantime, I've been taking medication daily that I understand may compromise other organs in an effort to manage pain.

I know the public system is swamped, but I feel the lack of keeping me (and I believe other patients) informed is atrocious. It's so sad that all I am able to do is wait until the pain is unbearable, present to my local emergency department who might declare it an emergency and then I believe use thousands more in public funds getting RFDS transport to Perth and emergency surgery. I feel the system isn't working.

Dear papacw96,

I was sorry to read that you are still waiting for your surgery to be scheduled, and that you haven’t been kept informed about how long you may be expected to wait. Without your details, it is difficult for me to know the reason why your surgery has not yet been scheduled.

I would therefore encourage you to contact our Patient and Family Liaison Office on (08) 9431 2787 (Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 4.30 pm) or via email anytime: FHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au. Once I have your personal details, the relevant team will be able to provide more information to you regarding your surgery. Alternatively, you can contact the waitlist team at Fremantle Hospital on (08) 9431 3333 and they will be able to assist you.

I am sorry that you are feeling angry and in pain. I do understand how frustrating waiting for surgery must be, so please do get in touch.

Kind regards

Neil Doverty
