"ED visit, private maternity care and birth"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department Joondalup Health Campus / Maternity

(as the patient),

I relocated from regional WA for a private birth with Dr Kym at JHC. Throughout the 6 weeks prior to my birth I was getting 2x weekly CTG on the maternity ward, all the midwife’s I dealt with were very friendly and caring making this first time mum feel at ease, especially midwife Fletch.

I presented to ED 38 weeks pregnant with a severe migraine to which at the time I thought might have been pre-eclampsia or a TIA/stroke due to my symptoms. I expected a wait but I was triaged promptly and taken straight in to a bed. The ED doctor and Nurse were fabulous and worked me up quickly and thoroughly. I then saw the on call O&G who contacted my private obstetrician immediately and worked out a plan with the Gen Med on call. I was admitted to H1 and was looked after very well. I’d say the care I received was impeccable.

Fast forward three days later I was induced as  planned and things didn’t go to plan therefore I needed a C-Section. My midwife Kate, scrub scout nurse, anesthetist, anesthetic nurse, pediatricians and especially my obstetrician Dr Kym were absolutely fantastic, were friendly, calm, compassionate and thoroughly explained everything as we went. A special thanks to the scrub scout nurse who stayed back after her shift to look after me in recovery due to staffing.. Once on the ward I was taken care of by some fabulous midwife’s throughout my 5 day stay. Especially the midwife’s that took the extra time to help me with breast feeding and latching, reassuring me when I had the blues. I can’t remember your names but thank you!

Overall I had a very positive experience throughout my contact with JHC ED & Maternity. For a first time mum and also fellow health professional I am so grateful to the care I received as I know how tough it is at the moment with staffing.
