"Great care from some nurses"

About: Newman Hospital Newman Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

When we go into WACHS we got one nurse there who is really great. They are the type of person who our community needs. I been in the hospital and all the support that they give makes people happy to go in. I had 3 good nights because of them. Happy client with happy nurse they are very caring and kind with Aboriginal people. We never had that chance years ago now we have and there are definitely 2 nurses wrecking that, in my opinion. I feel safe and wouldn't trade them for the world.

It has been very unsafe going into the Newman hospital for emotions for us. Culturally unsafe. I used to have bad personal experiences at Newman hospital. We are scared. Now I can face it because of the nurse. I used to be scared and I still am if they aren’t there. I feel there are a lot of attitudes that need to be fixed up with the nurses and doctors but that nurse is really good. There was a lady doctor Catherine who really cared too. This nurse and her were really good but I believe she is going. I stayed in for 3 nights and the other nurse looked after me so well and nothing was a trouble at all.

I recall there were 2 very rude and mean nurses though who gave the good nurse a hard time for looking after us. I feel that is unacceptable bringing him down. You could see. The good nurse was always busy being kind to everyone I saw and they ask proper questions and listens and they have been the same and always kind since I met them. They care for everyone. I believe there are two nurses who are mean to the good nurse because they aren’t racist and goes above and beyond. They can't be bothered with us. They don't listen. They shut me down. They rolled their eyes at me and they rolled them at the good nurse too.

I feel you could tell they gave the good nurse a hard time when they are kind and they get us cups of tea and makes sure everyone is ok. The other nurse told them they don’t need to do that they can get their own cup of tea but the good nurse said that day they had time to do it and it was nice. I believe the other nurses had time too. They were just sitting talking and on their phone. It is not ok for nurses to give the good nurse a hard time and bully them for being kind. I saw it with my own eyes and felt unsafe and scared of them. It makes it bad for everyone. I feel they don't treat Aboriginal people right. They were just sitting talking behind the desk and not having good attitudes to anybody and got angry when they had to get up.

What really got to me even worse was that they gave the other nurse a hard time for being a really good person. Nothing was a problem for this nurse who was really good but everything was a problem for the other two nurses who looked like they didn't want to be there or work. I am not happy with the care and attitude from two nurses even though the other nurse was so good and kind and I would only come to the hospital if they are on or more people like them. I feel those two others are so culturally unsafe its bad. They make me scared and with the other nurse I feel really good.

Dear homamtz36,

I want to personally thank you for bringing to our attention your experiences at Newman Health Service. Hearing that you found solace in the care of one of our nurses and a doctor during your stay is heartening, yet it is deeply concerning that these positive experiences were overshadowed by a feeling of cultural unsafety and witnessing disrespectful behaviour towards staff members who were providing compassionate care.

As we recognise the significance of National Sorry Day and the National Apology, it is imperative that our actions reflect our dedication to reconciliation and building a culturally safe environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. Newman Health Services’ goal is to close the health outcome gap and ensure that every patient feels valued and respected when receiving care in our facilities. I am truly sorry that your experience did not meet this standard. We are actively working to address the issues you've raised, including fostering a more inclusive and respectful workplace culture and ensuring all staff members are supported in providing culturally sensitive care. Our commitment to regular dialogue with our Elders and community leaders is central to our efforts to continuously improve the cultural safety of our health service.

Your feedback highlights issues we believe need to be addressed immediately with a thorough review of the incident. I invite you to call me on 0499 525 088 so that we can learn more about what happened. I would also like to take this opportunity to assure you we have Cultural Engagement Training scheduled in the immediate future and it is expected all staff are to participate in this program.

In response to the feedback we have received, including yours, we are seeking to organise a meeting with all concerned consumers and carers to discuss these issues in depth so we can explore solutions together with me and the District Director of Nursing. Your insights and experiences would be a valuable contribution to this dialogue.

I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss with you your availability for such a meeting and whether you are interested in being part of this important initiative. Together, we can work towards a future where every individual feels safe and supported at Newman Health Service.

Warm regards

Sas Hennings
