"MAPS Pregnancy Care at the hospital"

About: Osborne Park Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I was included in the MAPS program at Osborne Park Hospital for the birth of my second child. My assigned MAPS midwife was Erin, who provided care for me from my second appointment at OPH onwards, extending to after the birth of my child.

The MAPS appointments always ran on-time, could be completed in the comfort of my own home (if I wanted to) and allowed sufficient time for the standard check up plus any additional actions required.

During one appointment my baby’s heart rate was high, so Erin was able to take me across to the Assessment Unit and ensure I was promptly monitored.

The continuity of care and the rapport that I was able to build with Erin over the course of my pregnancy was incredibly reassuring, during what can be a very confusing and somewhat isolating time.

Once I had delivered my baby, Erin also completed my 4 post natal care appointments at home. Not only this, but Erin made herself available to answer any questions I had and follow up with me to check how I was both during and after my pregnancy. Including on public holidays and after hours, going above and beyond to provide exceptional care.

I felt the quality of the care provided through the MAPS program complemented the care provided by Osborne Park Hospital. I was monitored in the Assessment Unit on three different occasions (2 during pregnancy, 1 postnatal) and was really impressed by the high level of care from the midwives and doctors.

Unfortunately it was clear to me there were staffing issues at times, with midwives and doctors stretched across the AU, Birthing Suite and Ward. I feel that the nursing staff did their best to triage, monitor and treat me as efficiently as possible but were in some cases limited due to insufficient staffing levels.

Overall my experience at OPH was very positive, with a big emphasis on the MAPS program and my midwife Erin providing wonderful care for my child and I.

Dear Birth2024,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with our new pilot Maternity Antenatal and Postnatal Service (MAPS) program at Osborne Park Hospital (OPH). I’m glad to hear that the continuous support and care received throughout your pregnancy journey had such a positive impact. We’ll be sure to pass on your kind words to your MAPS midwife Erin and the staff at OPH for the care and reassurance they provided.

I’d also like to thank you for your feedback about your observations on the staffing levels at OPH, and for your kind recognition of the staff’s commitment to triaging, monitoring and providing care to patients. We closely monitor our staffing levels on a shift-by-shift basis, making adjustments to staffing and services as required, to ensure the safety of all women and their babies using the maternity service.

Once again, thank you for sharing your story – I wish you and your child all the best.

Kind regards,

Delaney
